I do my research and try products in stores before purchasing, but sometimes I still end up with products I'm not particularly impressed with. Sometimes products just aren't for everyone, so just because I'm not sold on these products it doesn't mean it isn't going to work for you.

The first two products I'm about to mention, I really tried to love. The first is the NARS The NARSissist Eyeshadow Palette, a shocking one considering how much I adore NARS products. With this palette, some of the shades are a little chalky which do not live up to the usual quality of NARS products and some shades just don't work for me. The shades on the left of the palette are gorgeous but the ones on the right are just too dark for everyday wear. Another disappointing palette is the Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palette in Obscura. This is the best palette of the collection after doing swatches in stores but even then, not all the shades are quite buttery enough for it to be worth the hefty price tag. Shocking, considering how good Hourglass products typically are.

In exchange for Sephora points, I wanted to try the Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer. I had never tried a primer before so I figured I would give this one a go. I didn't find that it left my skin any more glowy nor did it make my foundation last any longer.

Continuing on with samples, I get handfuls of Clinique samples as gifts with purchases when I repurchase favourites like the Bottom Lash Mascara or the Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm. I don't know what it is but the Clinique High Impact Mascara is so loved by many but me, until I near the end of the tube. It just seems too wet for my lashes for at least a month or two before it starts to give my lashes length and volume without weighing them down. Then with the Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover, I guess I just had high hopes for it considering how much I love the cleansing balm. This makeup remover just doesn't cut it for me as it just leaves an uncomfortably oily film where I use it and isn't as gentle as my beloved Bioderma.

On the lipstick front is the MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo. I adore the shade and I love MAC lipsticks but this matte formula is just too drying for me, especially in the winter. Lastly is another Clinique product, the Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint Lip Balm in Budding Blossom is just not worth the price tag in my opinion as it does leave a slight tint but it's barely anything at all. It also isn't as moisturizing as you would expect a tinted lip balm to be.

Are there any products that have been disappointing that you have tried recently?

  1. Great post. I've heard so many mixed reviews on that hourglass pallet. I dont think it's worth it as it sounds!

  3. I think my disappointing product would be the Revlon Matte Balm in Elusive - everyone says its a MLBB, or at least a nice pink - but it looks patchy and neon on me?! Strange...x

  4. Shadow palettes are my weakness so it's too sad to hear that great brands failed on those!
I'm not a big fan of Mac lipsticks either, some are so difficult to work with :(

  5. I found this too, its impossible to make it look good. It settles into every dry patch and line on my lips and looks a weird colour...

  6. I was definitely left down by the Vichy BB Cream as I find too drying on my skin and just doesn't sit well on my oily skin.

  7. Wow... I've heard great things about many of the products but I am so happy to see this post so that I don't accidentally purchase something not worth its price.

  8. If I am perfectly honest my Narsissist palette is also my most disappointing product of the past year. I am a complete Nars freak and got the palette even though I have nearly all the shades as singles and doubles. Great for travel, I thought. The formula is awful, however; I just cannot work with it. The shadows are hard and poorly pigmented. Such a tragedy and a missed chance for Nars.
I'm skipping the Hourglass palettes due to all the poor reviews. I have no chance to try these in person.
My most recent regret is the beautiful My Burberry highlighting compact from the holiday collection. It's a stunning highlighter, and I knew when I purchased it that it was fragranced, but nothing could have prepared me for the powerfully perfumed stench it exudes. My skin itches at the thought of it.
I also dislike the Charlotte Tilbury Dolce Vita palette. It just doesn't work for me.

  9. I used to have one of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders and it was just so 'Meh.' It cost so much but it really did nothing for me.

  10. The Sleek Conceal and Correct Palette was a big disappointment to me! I love the Clinique High impact but the High Impact Extreme Volume is even better!

  11. Shame you wasn't fussed on the mascara, I do love mine. Although I totally agree on the BB cream.

  12. That's so disappointing to hear that the Hourglass palette didn't work out for you. I've been reading a lot of mixed reviews on these palettes.

  13. Ruby Woo is the most stunning red, but the drying element is definitely a turn off! The Clinique Baby tints sound way too sheer to be worth the money!

  14. Man, the Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow palette was such a dud for me, I bought Exposure, and while all of the colors were pretty they preformed really badly. I returned it a few days later, it was such a disappointment.

  16. It's a shame that most of these are high end products! It's hard to justify the hefty price tag sometimes, that's why I hardly buy high end stuff for myself xD The Clinique High Impact mascara is just meh for me too.

  17. It’s such a shame that Hourglass product is such a disappointment. I have been waiting to read some more reviews, before purchasing, but I think I’m going to give this palette a miss!

  18. Oh that's too bad about the Hourglass palette. I've learned that you either hate it or love it based on reviews I've seen. It's really pricey to just be "ok". :/

  19. I was somewhat regretting not picking up the NARS palette so you made me feel better about that! I have heard the quality is inconsistent and I probably wouldn't use most of the colours in it. Shame about the Hourglass eyeshadow palette as well, especially since it's so pricey for such few shades.

  20. The Take The Day Off is good at what it does, but the oily consistency is what had put me off for a while! Also the chubby stick was a major let down for me! I didn't even see a tint!
At least you are honest with trying to love the products :)

  21. Love the honesty! I've never tried the Clinique baby tints but the original chubby sticks are amazing. I was a bit disappointed with the last two serums I've tried... still looking for the best!

  22. I love Ruby Woo, but I agree that the formula is incredibly dry and it tugs when applying. However that also makes it one of the most long lasting lipsticks I own. You can't have everything, I guess!

I've read a lot of mixed reviews about the Hourglass palettes, and the feeling I got for them is exactly yours: they aren't terrible, but not good enough for the price range.

  23. i really tried to love the narsissist palette as well, but i still can't get myself to use it as much as i would like to. it's such a shame, since it is gorgeous, it just doesn't perform well. it's a shame to hear that the hourglass palettes aren't up to everyone's standards, i was hoping they would be great. i love ruby woo, and i'm sad to see it didn't work out for you.

i haven't had a lot of products that weren't disappointing for me lately, i guess i've just hit a good streak of luck!

  24. I wanted to like it but I just didn't get along with the matte shades. They just didn't perform as well as they should for the price! xx

  25. Sephora actually kindly let me return them! Got to love Sephora for their return policy! xx

  26. I've swatched it as well and I wasn't too impressed. I had the same feeling about them as you did. Weird! xx

  27. I haven't had problems with MAC lipsticks yet but then again, I haven't tried that many. I'm all about the luster finish ones by them. They haven't failed me yet! xx

    ReplyDelete
  28. Other than the matte ones, I haven't had much of a problem with MAC lipsticks because I tend to go for the luster finish ones. xx

    ReplyDelete
  29. I haven't tried that one before but I've heard many good things about it! I guess not all products are for everyone, no matter how hyped up they are. xx

  30. What doesn't work for me may work for you but it's good to hear different opinions of each product. xx

  31. I absolutely love NARS products and yes, I also love their duos and the And God Created The Woman palette. So shocked that this one was a disappointment and I agree it was a missed chance for NARS.

I don't like scented products either. My skin does not like it so I just avoid it.

I haven't tried the Charlotte Tilbury products before but I've heard so much good about the Dolce Vita palette. If I'm honest, I'm not drawn to the shades in it but the other palettes look nice. xx

  32. I haven't tried those but the blushes are lovely! xx

  33. I haven't tried the High Impact Extreme Volume. I'll keep my eyes out for it. xx

  35. I've heard plenty of mixed reviews as well. Such a shame as they are gorgeous in the pan! xx

  36. I found the Clinique Baby Tints to be even more sheer than the Maybelline Baby Lips. I just don't get it. xx

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fortunately I was able to return this one as well. So disappointing and shocking as it is Hourglass! xx

  38. Hopefully! It's better to save your money for things that are worth it. xx

  39. I do research before buying high end products but sometimes they are still disappointing or I just don't get on with them. That's just how it goes sometimes. xx

  40. I would say skip it as well. I've been hearing more and more negative reviews. xx

    ReplyDelete
  41. Exactly! I know I can get something better for the same price. xx

    ReplyDelete
  42. Some shades are fine but some are just incredibly chalky and generally hard to work with. Same with the Hourglass palette. I really wanted to love both of them. xx

    ReplyDelete
  43. It doesn't perform as well as Bioderma does for me so I'm switching back. The Chubby Stick Baby Tints just didn't make any sense to me. I got nothing out of this! xx

    ReplyDelete
  44. I do like the original Chubby Sticks but the Baby Tints just don't cut it for me. xx

    ReplyDelete
  45. I find the NARS matte offerings to be just as good but less drying but of course, the price goes up. Can't have everything!

The Hourglass palettes just aren't worth the price. I'm not okay with paying that much for two shades that work great but three being barely workable. xx

  46. Hopefully you stay on the streak of luck! It's never good to find yourself disappointed in products, especially when they are expensive! xx
